News and eventsA flag for planet EarthThe contest was part of the activities of Earth & Space Week and was open to children from EU-25, plus Norway and Switzerland, ages 5-19. Winners were from Greece, Austria, Malta and Poland. At the opening ceremony of Earth & Space Week in Brussels, the winning children received fabric flags printed with their own designs from Prince Philippe of Belgium, European Commission Vice President Gunter Verheugen, and the European Space Agency Head of Earth Observation Volker Liebig in front of an audience of astronauts, dignitaries and other senior officials.
The total number of entries per county were as follows: Austria 36, Belgium 81, Chech Republic 2, Denmark 16, Estonia 4, Finland 11, France 14, Germany 57, Greece 426, Hungary 3, Ireland 63, Italy 21, Latvia 38, Lithuania 73, Malta 70, Netherlands 30, Norway 2, Poland 198, Portugal 30, Slovakia 15, Slovenia 24, Spain 3, Sweden 46, United Kingdom 58.
